This week, the news of Mr. Ivan Daniel III's passing left me, like a lot of us deeply stunned. Ivan dedicated over three decades to crafting safe havens for black gay men, not just for revelry but for genuine connection and community-building. He singlehandedly revolutionized the L.A. party scene with his unique, inclusive, and undeniably enjoyable brand that everyone in the community has experienced at some point or another.
Ivan played a pivotal role in my life, guiding me through the promotion of my inaugural book release party on February 20th, 2005. His vast network became my enduring pillar of support, cultivating a fan base that remains steadfast even after 17 years. Over time, our conversations spanned from tackling addiction to navigating the complexities of being black and gay within the church.
He served as a guiding figure, a mentor to every gay black man who graced his events, exuding an unmistakable aura of kindness and care in his true pisces nature.
My last encounter with Ivan was a couple of years ago. Though I had withdrawn from the social scene, a friend visiting from New York coaxed me out to celebrate a mutual friend's birthday and my recent achievements. Naturally, Ivan was there. I cherish the opportunity I had to express my love and gratitude towards him, especially captured on film while goofing around with my friend—a moment encapsulating Ivan's essence.
Rest in power, Ivan. Your contributions to the city of Los Angeles and the experiences you crafted for black gay men shall forever be remembered and cherished.
